Voice of OC Report: Cities Cracking Down on STRs
A new report from Voice of OC highlights a growing trend across Orange County: more cities are taking a harder look at short-term rentals ahead of the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics, with some adopting new limits, enforcement tools, fees, and penalties.
The article notes that Placentia recently adopted new STR regulations, including permits, guest limits, spacing requirements between rentals, inspections, a two-night minimum stay, and strict penalties that can include permanent permit revocation after a second violation within 12 months. Brea is also moving to significantly increase fines for STR violations, using new authority under state law to raise penalties as high as $1,500 for a first violation, $3,000 for a second, and $5,000 for three or more violations.
For Newport Beach short-term rental owners and managers, the lesson is clear: STR policy is not standing still. Cities throughout Orange County are responding to neighborhood complaints, enforcement concerns, tourism pressures, and major upcoming events. Some are choosing reasonable regulation. Others are moving toward more aggressive fines, caps, restrictions, and revocation rules.
This is exactly why NBSTRA exists.
Newport Beach STR owners and managers need an organized, credible, responsible voice at City Hall – one that supports good operators and reasonable rules, but also pushes back when proposals go too far or fail to recognize the value STRs bring to the local economy, visitors, small businesses, and property owners.
If you are already a member of NBSTRA, thank you. Your support helps make sure our industry is represented when decisions are being made. If you are not yet a member, now is the time to join. The more owners and managers we have standing together, the stronger our voice will be in protecting responsible short-term rentals in Newport Beach.
NBSTRA will continue monitoring local and regional STR policy developments and working to ensure responsible Newport Beach STR owners and managers have a seat at the table.
