City Council Moves Forward with Public Safety Ad Hoc Committee

Following up on our preview of Tuesday’s Newport Beach City Council meeting, the Council took action on both items we were watching.

Most importantly, the Council approved moving forward with the creation of a Public Safety Ad Hoc Committee to consider public safety strategies for holidays and other City needs following the July 4 incidents.

NBSTRA believes it is important that short-term rental owners and managers have a voice in that discussion. We will be reaching out to the City to request that NBSTRA participate in the committee on behalf of Newport Beach’s short-term rental industry.

The Council also approved the proposed amendment to the City’s short-term lodging permit rules. The change limits an owner to one reinstatement after a permit has been closed for two consecutive annual reporting periods with no STR activity. If the reinstated permit is subsequently closed again for inactivity, it would no longer be eligible for reinstatement.

We will continue to stay engaged with Council Members and City staff as the City develops its post-July 4 plans and will keep members updated as the ad hoc committee takes shape.
