A Message from NBSTRA About Flooding in Newport
The flooding in Newport Beach today has brought damage and disruption to our community, particularly on the Balboa Peninsula, where floodwaters inundated streets, stranded vehicles and affected homes and businesses.
On behalf of NBSTRA, we extend our best wishes to everyone affected. To our members and neighbors whose properties have been damaged, we know the cleanup, uncertainty and interruption to daily life can be difficult. We hope you, your families and your guests are safe.
The City of Newport Beach has announced a local emergency following coastal flooding associated with high surf and elevated ocean water levels. City crews have been rebuilding protective beach berms, operating pumps and managing tide valves, with hazardous conditions potentially continuing through the weekend. We appreciate the work of City employees and first responders protecting our neighborhoods.
For now, please put safety first and follow official City updates. Avoid walking or driving through flooded streets, move vehicles away from vulnerable areas, and make sure guests are aware of changing conditions. The City has announced that free, prefilled sandbags are available at the Corporation Yard, 592 Superior Avenue, with empty bags available at Newport Beach fire stations, while supplies last. You can also sign up for Newport Notified emergency alerts.
If your property has sustained damage, document it with photographs and video when it is safe to do so, keep receipts for cleanup and repairs, and contact your insurance provider promptly about coverage and next steps.
NBSTRA will try to be back in touch next week with more information for property owners dealing with flood damage.
The City’s local emergency declaration should not be treated as confirmation that individual owners qualify for federal disaster assistance. That often requires state and federal agencies making similar declarations, and further depends on additional authorizations and program eligibility requirements. Where we can, we will distinguish confirmed assistance from possibilities still under review.
Please stay safe, look out for your neighbors, and accept our best wishes for a safe and speedy recovery.
