This Thanksgiving, We’re Grateful for Newport’s STR Community

As families and friends gather in Newport Beach for the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to take a moment to say something simple and sincere: thank you. NBSTRA only launched earlier this year, and everything we’ve accomplished so far exists because STR owners, managers, and supporters decided that having a voice at City Hall matters – and chose to show up.

From the start, NBSTRA was built on a straightforward idea: responsible short-term rentals deserve fair, stable, and enforceable rules – and the people who provide those homes should have a seat at the table when policy decisions are made. In just a few short months, you’ve turned that idea into a real, organized presence in Newport Beach.

We are especially grateful for the owners and managers who stepped up early. Today, members representing nearly 200 of the roughly 900 operating STR permits in Newport Beach have joined NBSTRA.

That is a meaningful share of the market, and it sends a clear signal that our community is engaged, paying attention, and committed to doing things the right way. Your willingness to invest time, membership dues, and energy has given NBSTRA real weight when we speak about how rules are working – or not – on the ground.

We’re equally thankful for the managers and management companies who juggle day-to-day operations and still make time to participate. You are often the first to see how changes in policy or enforcement play out in real time – from parking and trash to TOT, inspections, and communication with guests. When you share that experience with us, it helps NBSTRA provide practical, solution-oriented feedback to the City.

And we want to recognize our supporters – neighbors, local businesses, and community members who don’t hold STR permits but understand the value that well-run short-term rentals bring to Newport Beach. Your willingness to speak up, attend meetings, or simply stay informed adds credibility and balance to the conversation.

Together, we have already built momentum:

  • We’ve held one in-person meeting and two online meetings, each one better attended and more interactive than the last. Your questions, suggestions, and stories have shaped NBSTRA’s priorities and helped sharpen our advocacy.

  • We’ve established a working relationship with the Newport Beach City Council and staff, creating an open channel for effective advocacy. When proposals affecting STRs come forward, NBSTRA is now a recognized voice – able to provide data, context, and on-the-ground perspective from responsible operators.

There is much more to do. Other cities around us are revisiting caps, fees, and enforcement. Policy winds can shift quickly. But this first year has shown that when STR owners, managers, and supporters stand together, we can help keep Newport Beach’s rules fair, clear, and focused on genuine solutions – not headlines.
