Tomorrow’s City Council Agenda Focuses on Social-Media Takeovers, Not STRs

NBSTRA Engagement and Member Stories, As Well As Ongoing Investigations, Help Drive City Next Steps

The Newport Beach City Council meets tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28, and the published agenda includes no new proposal to restrict short-term rentals or blame STR owners and guests for the violence and disorder that occurred on July 4.

Instead, the Council will consider directing staff to develop possible measures addressing minor curfews, unlawful mass gatherings, events organized or promoted through social media, public nuisances, parental accountability and Safety Enhancement Zone regulations. The focus remains where the evidence has pointed: social-media-incited gatherings and the individuals responsible for unlawful behavior.

This is an encouraging development. We believe NBSTRA’s direct outreach to the City Council, the messages sent by dozens of our members and the City’s continuing investigation have helped keep the discussion focused on the facts rather than assumptions about short-term rentals.

That does not mean our work is finished. These proposals will still need to be developed, and NBSTRA will carefully review any potential changes—particularly modifications to the Safety Enhancement Zone—to ensure responsible owners and managers are not subjected to unjustified new restrictions or penalties.

Meanwhile, Newport Beach police are monitoring online activity promoting another possible “end-of-summer” gathering described in media reports as a potential TikTok-style takeover. Police have warned organizers and participants that additional officers will be deployed and that criminal activity will result in enforcement.

This further reinforces the importance of focusing the City’s response on those who organize, promote and participate in unlawful conduct.

NBSTRA will remain engaged with the City Council, staff and law enforcement while continuing to advocate for responsible short-term rental owners and managers, and we will keep you in the loop on these activities.
