Volunteers Needed - NBSTRA Launches Informal Working Group with City of Newport Beach
Executive Summary
NBSTRA has established an informal working group with the City to improve ongoing communication about short-term rental issues.
The first meeting will be Thursday, February 19, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM, at Newport Beach City Hall.
NBSTRA is recruiting 4–5 permitted property owners and 2–3 STR management companies to participate in quarterly, in-person meetings.
NBSTRA will hold a short internal prep session (likely by video) for selected participants ahead of the first meeting.
Over the past year, NBSTRA has focused on a simple goal: making sure responsible short-term rental owners and managers have a seat at the table when City policies and enforcement practices affect how our businesses operate. We’re pleased to share this major positive development in that effort.
NBSTRA has now established an informal working group with the City to create a regular forum for dialogue between the short-term rental community and City staff. This is an encouraging step forward for industry–City relations in Newport Beach. we’re pleased the City is willing to engage directly with our industry via the Alliance, and it gives both the City and NBSTRA a structured opportunity to raise concerns, share operational realities, and work toward practical improvements over time.
We also want to note and thank our representative at City Hall, Todd Priest & Associates, for working with the City to establish this opportunity.
First Meeting Details
The working group will hold its first meeting on:
Date: Thursday, February 19
Time: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Location: City Hall
This first meeting is intended to be introductory. The purpose is to begin the dialogue, establish expectations, and set the groundwork for future discussions – not to deep-dive into specific issues in the first session. That said, the overall intent of the working group is clear: create a consistent, professional channel where the City and the STR community can engage proactively rather than only when problems arise.
Who We’re Looking For
To make this working group effective, NBSTRA is recruiting a small, representative group of members who can bring firsthand experience and a constructive, solutions-oriented approach.
We are seeking:
4–5 property owners who currently hold active STR permits
2–3 STR property management companies currently managing permitted STRs
Commitment: Participants should be able to attend quarterly, in-person meetings. The goal is continuity – a stable group that can build trust, track progress, and help move discussions from “what’s happening” to “what works.”
How to Apply
If you are interested in serving on the working group, please email info@nbstra.com with a brief note explaining:
who you are (owner or management company),
your experience with STR operations in Newport Beach, and
why you would contribute meaningfully to the group.
For those selected, NBSTRA will schedule a short internal prep session ahead of the first meeting (likely by video) to align on goals, key themes, and meeting logistics.
We appreciate everyone who helps strengthen NBSTRA’s ability to represent the full STR community – owners and managers alike. The more credible, organized, and solutions-focused we are, the better positioned we are to protect responsible short-term rentals and keep the program workable for all.
